GM 2.3 QUAD4 AND 2.4 TWIN CAM CAMSHAFT HOUSING STUD REPAIR KIT

The GM QUAD4 and TWIN CAM  CAMSHAFT HOUSING STUD REPAIR KIT is used to replace the factory camshaft housing/cam tower bolts on the Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Chevrolet car equipped with the 2.3 Liter Quad 4 OHC and DOHC engines as well as the 2.4 Twin Cam engines. Often when repairing the 2.3 Quad 4 and 2.4 Twin Cam engines, during the camshaft housing/cam tower final torque sequence, the factory steel bolts will strip the threads in the aluminum head.

This happens because the factory bolt is a bit short and does not engage enough of the threads to reliably produce the clamping force required to form a good camshaft housing/cam tower seal and prevent engine oil leaks. A longer stud should have been used in this application. When the threads strip the engine repair can not be completed until the threads are repaired.  The common repair is to use a heli-coil which is also prone to stripping out. Installing the heli-coil will also require the entire camshaft housing/cam tower or cylinder head to be physically removed from the cylinder block costing you additional time and expense.

Our Quad 4 and Twin Cam camshaft housing stud repair kit will resolve the problem even if the bolt hole in the cylinder head has been stripped out with the factory length bolt. These repair studs can easily be installed in just a few minutes and with the camshaft housing/cam tower and cylinder head still in the car.

The cylinder head actually has a full 1” of thread available but the factory bolt only engages approximately 3/8” of the available thread.  When stripped out, there is still approximately 5/8” of good thread remaining.  This stud set and matching lock nuts are made of grade 10 steel and are a full 5/8” longer than the factory bolt so that they will engage all the remaining threads in the head.

The repair kit includes your choice of 20, 10 or 5 studs with matching integrated lock washer nuts. 20 studs will allow you to replace all the intake and exhaust camshaft housing/cam tower bolts with studs. 10 studs are needed to repair just one cam tower, intake or exhaust. 5 studs can be used to selectively repair the studs you choose in either cam tower.

Installation does not require removing the entire camshaft housing/cam tower or cylinder head and they can be installed as a complete set, or you can use them as needed to repair individual bolt holes in the cylinder head that have become stripped. Once installed, you follow the recommended installation and torque sequence as recommended by GM.
